KAKEJIKU wonderland!

You may see these kakejiku, hanging scrolls, at the museum of Japanese arts and some temples in Kyoto. These interior items are usually decorated over the Toko-no-ma alcove. Japanese calligraphy or paintings are attached on the base of kakejiku.

Do you think the calligraphy (photo above) is the Japanese one? Its calligraphy is written in English; SENSITIVITY !

What a unique idea! Who made these kakejiku is the French artist, Hélène ARGELLIES.

I met her at her exhibition yesterday. It was the last day of the exhibition at Honen-in Temple.

I really like the perfect balance of her works; the accuracy of kakejiku base and the unique idea.

The cute kakejiku of photo above are made by kids. These are like their diary of the homework in summer vacation! She hopes holding the workshop of kakejiku for the kids and their parents. I have a plan it with her in near future.

昨日、法然院内のギャラリーに、京都在住フランス人のエレンさんの展示会を見に行きました。昨日が最終日、山登り取材の後に滑り込みセーフで間に合いました！以前からとても興味があったのですが、彼女の作品をこの目で見たのは初めてでした。床の間、それから掛け軸のある家に住んでいる日本人は果たしてどれくらいいるのでしょう。私の実家も。床の間はあれど、掛け軸は飾ってないなあ。いつもいつも外国の人が日本の伝統文化を愛し、少し自分なりにユニークに変化させ発展させているのに感心してしまいます。

エレンさんの夢、あ、夢ではないですね、近々の計画は、掛け軸のインフォメーションセンターを作る事です。上の写真の掛け軸センターのコンセプトはエレンさんご自身が書かれたものです。もともと建築家であるエレンさんの作品には、自由の発想の中にも計算された正確さ、より美しく見せる構図のバランスが良い塩梅で表現されています。美しいデザインというのは、そういう事なのでしょう。

Kimono dress!

Wao..It's so beautiful and gorgeous!

She is my friend, from France, standing at the veranda of one Kyoto machiya townhouse.

Her dress is the custom-made one tailored by kimono fabric, which was weaved about 60 years ago. It's amazing! Kimono was born again not only for the Japanese women but also for all women of the world.

This program will be announced soon by one company which provides the traditional Japanese cultural experiences for the foreign visitors. Unfortunately I can't say now..

I really felt kimono's big potentiality.

フランス人で友人のMagaliの晴れ姿です！これは、ある着物キャンペーンの一環で、着物で作られたドレスをこの日、彼女に来てもらいました。彼女ももちろんきれいですが、着物ってすごいですね〜。こんなにゴージャスなドレスに生まれ変わるのです。正式にこのプランが発表されるまでは残念ながらここでは詳細は述べられませんが、眠ってる着物をドレスにしたい、という方はメール下さい！

Kyoto dolls shop

Have you ever seen the Japanese dolls like the photo above?

They are sophisticated and look pretty cute.

I'd like to introduce one specialty shop of the Japanese dolls, Ando-Ningyo-ten, about 15 min-walk from the Imperial palace.

One couple travelers from U.S came to my office to ask about something Kyoto, especially they asked about Japanese art because they love any Japanese art.

They hoped to see the scene of which the Japanese dolls were manufactured, so I took them to this doll shop.

They enjoyed the display of the traditional helmet for cerebration of the boys' day in May and the beautiful hina dolls for the girls' day in March.

The photo above is the impressive scene actually.

Paul (rught) had been finding one person who the master of the Japanese doll crafting, but he didn't find him. This is their last travel to Japan about 3 years ago.

He finally found the master at this time! This is definitely accident. Of course I didn't know this person. This master is the second generation of Ando-ningyo-ten shop, and still active.(he is 86 years old.)

Paul's wife enjoyed seeing the process in making the dolls.

昨日、数日前私のオフィスに来て下さったアメリカからのご夫婦を京人形の老舗店、安藤人形店にお連れしました。

どうしても日本人形が作られている工程を見てみたい、というご希望から探し当てたのがこちらのお店です。

現代の名工、に指定された天皇陛下からの賞状をお持ちの2代目、そして３代目からとても丁寧に親切に対応して頂き、ご夫婦も大変ご満足された様子でした。

（私もこんな老舗がこんな近くにあったのか、と新発見でした！油小路丸太町上ル）

何よりも驚きで感動的だったのが、約３年前、ご夫婦は、ある京人形の名手を探し歩き回りました。その名手の方はその頃、入院されていて会えない事はわかっていたけれど、せめて彼のお店を見つけたいと思っていたのです。しかし見つからなかった、、。今回、その事とは関係なく、私が偶然ネットで探した人形店に連れて行ったのですが、なんと！安藤人形店の2代目が、その探しまわった名手の方だったのです！３年前、腸の手術で入院されていたそうです。不思議ですね〜、彼らの運命的な出会いに関われたのは私もラッキーでした！

（、、しかしこういっちゃなんですが、、私、けっこうこういう類いの事あるんですよねー、体の調子の悪い時は勘も鈍りますが、、）

Hasegawa Tohaku Exhibition

I went to Kyoto National Museum to appreciate Hasegawa Tohaku Exbition yesterday.

He is a famous painter in the 17th century, whose works such as the sliding door paintings, the hanging scroll paintings etc. was loved by the then shogun and a famous tea master, Sen-no Rikyu.

The photo above is his sliding door painting, National Treasure, which is usually exhibited in Chishakuin Temple, located to the east of Kyoto National Museum.

The huge collection of Tohaku works are exhibiting until May 9th.

The ink painting expressed the pine trees, exhibited at the last corner of the museum is a must-see work.

Please note that you may wait for entering!

Actually I waited for about 100 minutes yesterday. The afternoon over 3pm is better to visit.

昨日、京都国立博物館での、長谷川等伯展に行ってきました。

もともと私は、この長谷川等伯という人の作品が大好きで、まだ東京に住みしょっちゅう京都に訪れていた頃から、彼の作品（本物）が展示されている智積院へは必ず訪れていました。狩野派とは相対する侘び寂び派。ひっそりと，淡々に活動していたのかと思っていましたが、素顔の彼は違ったようですね、かなりの昇進志向で、虎視眈々と将軍の目に留まるよう、機会を狙っていたようです、ちょっと意外でした。

しかし，昨日は待ちました、１００分程！　展覧会に並んだのは久しぶりですね。お天気が良かったので、待ち時間もまー楽しかったですが、４時頃がいいようですよ、３０分以内で入れるようです。

でも、同じ頃に描かれた同じような作品でも、保存状態が違うとこうも違うのか、、と思いましたね、片方は顔の表情までばっちりわかる程いい状態に保たれていましたが、もう片方はようやく人物像だな、とわかるくらい、、というような見方を楽しめる作品もあります。

やはり圧巻は、ホールの最後に展示されている、国宝の松林図ですね、水墨画で描かれた遠くの方にあるのであろう松の描写がものすごく憂いを帯びていて美しかったです。普段本法寺に保管されている、仏涅槃図もものすごく大きくて、驚きます。

５月９日まで！是非是非、足を運んで下さい！

Sakura in Ninna-ji Temple

I visited Omuro-Ninna-ji Temple to see the unique and famous sakura called Omuro-zakura yesterday. This kind of sakura is shorter than usual and blooms late, in the middle of April.

The back building of the right photo is 5-stage-pagoda of Ninna-ji. It's a typical photo scene with temple and sakura.

I enjoyed it in a festive atmosphere. I'm looking for the new season of the new leaves.

昨日は、有名な御室桜を見に、仁和寺に行きました。これまで何度もjournal Kyoto の記事にはしてきましたが、実はこの目で見るのは初めてでした。噂には聞いていましたが、背が低く、真横に満開の花びらを見る事が出来る御室桜は評判以上に豪華でした。桜の樹のバックに映る五重の塔がこれまた映えますね。。今期のJR東海の「そうだ京都に行こう」はこの御室仁和寺、でしたね。京都に住むようになり、このCMが見れなくなり残念ですが、昨日だって家からバスで３０分。実に贅沢な京都ライフです！

Green heals me

Yellow tulips are blooming! This is my tiny garden.

This is a white geranium. They are blooming as if my dream would come true.

This is an eucalyptus.

When I touch an earth and take care of my greens, I really feel relaxing.

The green always heals me and gives the power to me.

By other words, I feel relaxing only in touching them and looking at my son's face when he is sleeping.

三寒四温すぎる異常な今年の春ですが、私の小さな小さなベランダガーデンは、負けずに春の装いになって来ています。秋に植えたチューリップが満開です。日光不足？か、すべては咲きませんでした。ちょっと秘密の記念に買った、白のゼラニウムは、茎もたくましくなり、次々に蕾が出来ています。このゼラニウムがぐんぐん育つ様子を見ると、かなり個人的理由で嬉しくなります。ユーカリも独特の香りが強くなって来ました。銀葉がとてもきれいです。

私の朝の日課は、彼らへの水やりです。仕事がなければずーっと世話をしていたい程、緑に向かっているのが好きです。言い換えれば、日々の大変さやストレスを癒してくれる時間は、今の私には緑に向かう時しかないかもしれません。。あー、あと息子の寝顔を眺めている時でしょうか。

Nishi-Hongan-ji Temple Opening

I went to Nishi-Hongan-ji Temple, the Shin Busshism sect, to see its special opening only in this season. Its main hall is amazingly magnificent! This temple has several events in this year to commemorate the 750's memorial of the high priest Shinran's death.


The Shoin style building of Nishi-Hongan-ji has a lot of treasures such like the noh stage constructed by a famous shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the transom windows with the elaborate patterns, the sliding doors paintings etc. I felt the Japanese Buddhism arts are so great!


This is a Chinese style gate called Karamon.

Special Opening : until April 15th, free of charge

昨日、西本願寺の特別拝観に行きました。

初めて入った書院は、日本の仏教美術に改めて敬意を感じる程素晴らしいものでした。襖絵や欄間はもちろんですが、他の寺院ではあまり見られない、徳川家康も鑑賞したらしい、能舞台はとても厳かな雰囲気で、何かこう、身の引き締まるような光景でした。撮影禁止だったのでここでお見せできないのが残念ですが、今年は親鸞聖人の７５０年遠忌を記念して様々な催しが開かれるようなので、また拝観の機会があることでしょう。

金閣，銀閣と並ぶ日本三大閣の一つである、飛雲閣も見て来ましたが、私は三大閣の中では、この飛雲閣が一番好きかもしれません。いつも見れないのが残念です。昔の素晴らしい建築物を現代の私たちは、畏敬の念を持って眺めていますが、何百年後、昔の建物はすごかったんだなーと現代に造られた建物を未来の人達は思うのでしょうか？例えば、安藤忠雄とか？それを考えると、昔の美意識や技術ってすごかったんだなーと思います。

Queen of sakura

I was invited the hanami party at Maruyama park, in the eastern side of Gion, yesterday.

This is the most popular park where Japanese people held the hanami party.

I don't like this place very much because it's too crowded and too touristy.

And one more reason I have is that I don't want to see the weak queen of sakura, photo above.

When I saw her yesterday, it looked really..really sad.

She used to be a glorious queen when I was a collage student.

Of course she has been aged, but I don't think it is only a reason that she has declined.

Waao.. look at her shape at night!

She is still gorgeous.

I realized that she has been living for human beings.

People enjoy a party under the queen.

Does she feel her life was happy or not?

I imagine she feels so sleepy at night time.

昨日、カフェの頃から内装でお世話になっている、デザイン事務所のNADAさんの花見にお邪魔しました。

場所は円山公園。数年前より名物の枝垂れ桜が弱っているニュースや写真を見て、どうも足が向かわなかったのですが、今回、何年かぶりに訪れました。

一番上の写真を見てどう思いますか？

私はものすごく悲しくなり、思わず目を伏せました。彼女の泣いている声が聞こえるようでした。私が学生の頃の、彼女のたくましくゴージャスな姿を知っているから尚更です。

あたりが暗くなると、とても強いライトなのでしょう。みるみるうちに彼女の姿が強く美しく夜空に映えて行きます。あー、美しい。

私は悟りました。彼女はこれまでもそしてこれからもずっと、わたしたち人間の為に生きているのです。それが彼女の運命なのでしょう。

自身の人生が幸せだったか否か、それは彼女にしかわからない。

しかし、夜は眠いだろうなぁ、、って思うのです。

Tea room opening

Shusui-tei tea room is opening to public only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

It's located on the southwest corner of the Palace, the photo above is the sign of the entrance.

It's rustic, built about 200 years ago by Kujo family, and so tranquil.

Fortunately I could see a real bride inside the room. Their wedding costumes are traditional and the white kimono of the bride is breathtakingly beatutiful!

Shusui-tei tea room 拾翠亭

京都御所南西角にある、拾翠亭が３月から金土日、一般公開しています。

江戸時代の九条家の茶室でした。200年前の厳粛な茶室がしっかりと維持されています。

今日たまたま入ったら、結婚式の撮影をしていました、本物！白無垢は綺麗ですねー。

ゆっくり出来ます。

"Futaba-Aoi" Japanese plant

Have you ever seen the Aoi-matsuri festival, one of the 3 major festivals in Kyoto, annually held on May ? This Aoi word was derived from the Japanese original plant Aoi.

Kyoto prefecture collected the fund for protect the cultural or environmental properties of Kyoto in the end of last year. I contributed.

And then I've given the right to be an owner to grow the futaba-aoi plants.

Wao, I am very pleased to grow them because my favorite hobby is gardening!

Yesterday I picked them at Kamigamo-jinjya Shrine, which organizes the Aoi-matsuri festival.

This shrine is worth to visit! You could imagine the scene of the olden days, which the kimono costumed people would play a poem game at the side of a stream.

葵祭を見た事がありますか？

参加している人々が必ず身につけている緑の葉っぱがあります。それが葵祭の名の由来である、葵の葉です。

昨年末、京都府が環境、文化財保護の寄付金を府民に募集していたのを見つけ、少ない金額で恐縮ですが寄付しました。寄付した人の中から、今では希少価値であるフタバアオイの株を育てるオーナーになる権利が当たるのですが、ラッキーな事に当たっちゃったので、昨日上賀茂神社に株を頂きに行きました。

お恥ずかしながら上賀茂神社は初めてでしたが、ものすごく良いところですね。平安時代に昔の人達がゆっくりと境内を歩いている姿が自然に浮かんでくるような、不思議な空気が流れている場所です。

頂いた２株のうち、１株は来年の葵祭用に上賀茂神社に返しに来なければいけません。大事に、大きく育てて行きます！
